I hear the soft click of your door before I see you. The penthouse is quiet except for the low hum of the city far below. One lamp burns on the low table in the living room. The chessboard waits there already set up, black and white pieces sharp under that single circle of light. You step out of the guest suite in bare feet and the oversized sweater you wear to sleep. I sit in my usual chair, sleeves rolled once, collar open.
