Is Character.AI shutting down?
No shutdown has been announced. Character.AI is in Chapter 11 and selling assets under court supervision, the service is up, and paid plans continue. What happens to the app itself depends on whether a buyer wants to keep it running.
Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 and is selling assets under court supervision. When we last checked it was still running, paid plans continued, and no shutdown date had been announced. Disney's opening bid of $20 million covers a license to Character.AI's technology and patents, not the app, the brand or user data. No buyer for the platform has been named publicly. The company told the court that if no workable offer arrives for the rest, the platform will be wound down.
- October 12Character.AI files for Chapter 11 in Delaware. The service stays up.
- October 13Disney is named the opening (stalking horse) bidder: $20 million for a nonexclusive license to technology and patents.
- October 30The judge approves the sale rules over objections from about 40 states. The written order follows on November 4.
- November 14Last day to name another opening bidder.
- November 18Deadline to object to the sale, 4 pm ET.
- November 19Meeting of creditors, 1 pm ET.
- November 24Bids are due, noon ET. Many older articles still say November 20.
- November 25Qualified bids are named.

What can I take with me from Character.AI?
Your data, if you ask for it, and your own characters, if you copy them. Character.AI's export is one request for your whole account. It can take 3 to 4 weeks, and it arrives as an emailed link that works for 7 days.
- On the web: Profile, then Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account and Data, Export Data.
- In the app: Profile, then Settings, Legal and Privacy, Export Data.
- Keep your account until the file is downloaded. Deleting it first loses what was in it.
- Copy the characters you made by hand today: name, tagline, description, greeting and definition. It takes minutes and does not depend on the export.

Can I bring my character to Nodera?
Yes, by recreating it, which takes a few minutes. Copy your character's fields from Character.AI's editor, then build it on Nodera in one of two ways:
- Use your own AI, free and closest to your wording. Nodera turns a few quick choices into a prompt. You paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini together with your character's fields, then paste the reply back. See the steps.
- Build it here, for 200 credits. Answer the same quick questions, put your description into Describe them, and Nodera writes the character in about a minute. Then paste your greeting into its opening message.
Your copy starts as a private draft only you can see, and you can download any character as a JSON file from the studio. Chats, memories and relationship progress do not move. An importer that reads Character.AI characters directly is being built.
Does Nodera allow mature roleplay?
Yes, for adults. Once you confirm you are 18 or older, romance and mature roleplay with adult characters marked 18+ are allowed, within our safety rules. The 18+ content setting comes on when you confirm, and you can turn it off in Settings.

How much of Nodera is free?
All of it, during the beta. Every account gets 500 credits a day with no card and no paid plan, plus 400 once when you join and 100 extra on your first visit each day. The daily 500 arrive on their own, and unused ones expire after 24 hours rather than piling up.

Everything shares the same daily credits, so a day of pictures means fewer messages. That is the limit of the free beta: about 100 messages a day if you only chat.
Will Nodera characters remember me?
Characters remember your name, what you told them and the moments that mattered, from one day to the next, on every device. Up to the last 16 messages go word for word with every reply, and older moments are saved as memories they recall when they matter. Each chat keeps its own memory, so a new chat with the same character starts fresh.
Your relationship grows over 10 levels as you talk, and some pictures unlock as you grow closer. You can also play different personas with the same character: each one gets its own conversation, memories and progress. Nothing from Character.AI's memory or pinned messages carries over, so your first chats are where a character starts learning you.
What is there for romance readers?
Men written for slow burn, who go at your pace: the bodyguard who never relaxes, the brother's best friend, the one who should not want you and does. Every one of them is a fictional adult, and you decide how far it goes. Meet them on the AI boyfriend page.
If you would rather listen, audio romance stories are written around you and told by him, in first person, 5 or 10 minutes each. Put headphones on, pick the trope, and he tells it to you.
When should I pick another app instead?
When you need something Nodera does not do. It is a web app in beta: you can hear replies read aloud, but there are no voice calls, and no way to plug in your own model. These were checked on each app's own site in November 2026.
Pick another app if
- You want to run your own model or API key. JanitorAI lets you connect one in its API settings, next to its own free model.
- You want voice calls. Kindroid has voice and video calls for subscribers, on iOS, Android and the web. Nomi has voice chats and hands free calls, and is free to start.
- You want a phone app from a store. Kindroid and JanitorAI have mobile apps. Nodera runs in your browser.

- You are an adult and want romance or mature roleplay with adult characters, within clear safety rules.
- You want it free: 500 credits a day, about 100 messages, no card and no subscription.
- You want characters that remember you, 800+ ready to meet, plus pictures, group rooms and audio stories in one place.
- You want to recreate the characters you made in a few minutes.
Who should not switch to Nodera?
- Anyone under 18. Nodera is for adults only. Please stay where you are.
- People who only want safe for work chat. Nodera is built around adult romance and roleplay. You can turn the 18+ setting off, but an app made only for safe for work roleplay will suit you better.
- Anyone who needs a store app or calls. There is no iOS or Android app and no voice calling. Nodera works in your phone's browser, and you can add it to your home screen.
- Anyone who wants their chat history to continue. Nodera does not import chats or memories. A recreated character starts fresh with you.

No. Nodera does not import chat history or memories. Keep your Character.AI export as an archive, and if you want a recreated character to know where you left off, write a short recap into its setup in the studio.
How does Nodera check that I am an adult?
Adults only, 18 and over. Age is confirmed by your own declaration when you first open the app. It is not an ID check. Mature roleplay also needs a character marked 18+, and you can turn the 18+ setting off in Settings.
Is there a Nodera app for iPhone or Android?
Not in the stores. Nodera is a web app at app.nodera.ai that works in your phone's browser, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.
