What is happening with Character.AI?
Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 and is selling assets under court supervision. It says the platform is still up, and that it will be wound down if no workable bid to keep it running is found. Our Character.AI bankruptcy explainer has the dates and what each one means.
How do I request my Character.AI data?
Use Character.AI's own export, from your account settings. It is one request for your whole account.
On the web
Profile, then Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account and Data, Export Data. A pop up confirms that the link will come by email.
Or in the app
Profile, then Settings, Legal and Privacy, Export Data. A Success banner confirms the request.
Wait for the email
Character.AI says the export can take 3 to 4 weeks. The link goes to the email address on your account, so make sure you can still open that inbox.
Download it within 7 days
The link works for 7 days from when the email is sent. Download the file and keep a second copy somewhere safe.
Keep your account until then
Leave your Character.AI account alone until the file is downloaded and opened.
Before you delete anything
Deleting your account before the export arrives loses what was in it, and deletion cannot be undone. Character.AI does not say exactly what the export contains, so open it when it arrives and check that the chats and characters you care about are there.
How do I copy the characters I made?
By hand, today: a few minutes per character, with no need to wait for the export. Open your profile, find the character, open its edit page, and copy each field into a document under its own label.
| Field | Where it is in the editor | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Name | At the top of the editor | Shown everywhere. Keep it exact. |
| Tagline | Add Tagline: the short line under the name on cards | The one line hook, usually under ten words |
| Description | Add Description: shown on the profile page, up to 500 characters | Who they are, often in their own voice |
| Greeting | The Greeting field, plus any extra greetings you added | The first message of every new chat |
| Definition | Add Character Definition: up to 32,000 characters, with the example dialogue | Personality, voice and rules. The most important part. |
If the character uses a lorebook, copy its most important entries too. Save the avatar image for your own records. Character.AI's terms say that, as between you and Character.AI, you own the characters you create.
Browser extensions that copy characters and chats automatically do exist. We do not recommend them: Character.AI's terms ban automated data gathering, and an extension that can read your account can read every chat.
Can I copy characters made by other people?
Only if their creator lets you see the definition. On Character.AI a creator chooses Remixable, Viewable or Private Definition. The name, greeting and descriptions stay visible to anyone who can chat with the character, but a private definition is hidden from everyone except its creator.
Even when you can see it, the character is still theirs. Keep any copy for yourself, and ask the creator before you share or publish it anywhere.
How do I keep my persona?
Copy it by hand. In Character.AI, personas are in your profile settings under Persona. Copy the name and the text in its box, for each persona you use.
On Nodera, open Settings, then My roleplay personas, then New persona. Paste the name, and the text into About this persona (up to 2,000 characters). Tap Draft from description to write how you look in pictures, then Create persona. In a chat, tap as yourself at the top and pick the persona: each one gets its own conversation, memories and progress with that character.
What about my chats?
Keep them as an archive. The export is Character.AI's own way to keep your chat history, and the file is yours to read later.
No other app can carry on the same conversation with the same memory, and Nodera does not import chat history. If you want a recreated character to know where you left off, write a short recap ("Last time, we...") into the Setup box under Opening scene in the studio. It holds about 300 characters and applies to every new chat with that character, so it is a starting point, not a memory.
What does not move to another app?
- Character.AI's memories and pinned messages.
- Character voices, including any voice made from a clip.
- Your relationship progress and the conversation itself. A recreated character starts fresh with you.
- Avatars. On Nodera a new portrait is drawn from the character's description instead.
- Lorebooks and alternate greetings, unless you copy them by hand.
- Likes, chat counts and followers.
How do I recreate my character on Nodera?
With the fields you copied, in a few minutes. Nodera cannot read Character.AI characters directly yet (an importer is being built), so today you rebuild the character in the creator. The free way, Use your own AI, keeps your wording closest:
Open Create
Sign in at app.nodera.ai and tap Create: the plus in the middle of the bar on a phone, or Create in the side menu on a computer.
Choose Use your own AI
Under How do you want to build?, pick Use your own AI. It is free and uses no credits.
Tap through the quick questions
Pick the starting point and bond closest to your character. Your own text matters more than these answers, so you can tap Looks good, skip to review to jump ahead. On One last look, tap Build my prompt.
Paste your character in
In Step 1, Describe your character, replace the text with your labeled fields. Add a line such as: "Convert this Character.AI character for Nodera. Keep the name, the greeting and my wording as close as you can. The character is an adult." Add NSFW yes or no.
Send it to your AI
Tap Copy prompt, or tap ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to copy it and open that site, then paste it into a new chat and send. The AI may ask one short question first, then answers with one block of code. Tap that block's copy button.
Paste the reply back
In Step 2, Paste the reply, paste it and tap Validate & continue, then Save and adjust details.
Check it in the studio
Your character opens as a private draft. Read the Opening message, Tagline, Voice and Example replies, tap Generate portrait under Portrait and gallery, then start a test chat.
A long definition will not fit word for word. Nodera keeps a backstory of about 1,500 characters, an opening message of about 1,800, up to three example replies, and facts that unlock as you grow closer, so your AI condenses the rest. Read what it kept before you start.
Would rather not use another AI? Pick Build it here instead. Answer the same questions, put your tagline and a short version of your description into Describe them (up to 600 characters), and Nodera writes the character in about a minute for 200 credits. Then paste your greeting into the Opening message in the studio, since this way keeps less of your wording. Our guide to building a character with ChatGPT shows the first way in more detail.
What you paste goes to the AI you choose, under its own privacy terms. Drafts stay private to you until you publish, and you can download any character as a JSON file from the studio. Nodera is made for adults, so if your character is under 18 or written to seem it, please do not bring it.
Questions people ask
How long does a Character.AI data export take?
Character.AI says it can take 3 to 4 weeks. The download link arrives by email and expires 7 days after it is sent, so watch your inbox and keep your account until you have the file.
Does the export include my characters' definitions?
Character.AI does not document what the export contains. To be safe, copy the name, tagline, description, greeting and definition of each character you made by hand, so you do not depend on the file.
Am I allowed to copy my own character to another app?
Character.AI's terms say that, as between you and Character.AI, you own the characters you create, while Character.AI keeps a license to them. Copying your own definition by hand fits that. Characters made by other people belong to their creators.
Should I use a browser extension to export everything?
We do not recommend it. Character.AI's terms ban scraping and automated data gathering, and an extension with access to your account can read every chat. Character.AI's own export and copying by hand are slower but safer.
Can I import my Character.AI chats into Nodera?
No. Nodera does not import chat history, memories or relationship progress. Keep your export as an archive, and write a short recap into a recreated character's setup if you want it to know where you left off.
Will a recreated character remember me?
Not from Character.AI: it starts fresh. On Nodera it then learns you as you talk, remembering your name, what you told it and the moments that mattered, from one day to the next, on every device.
Do I have to leave Character.AI?
No. Character.AI is still running, and these steps work as a backup either way. Requesting your export and copying your characters does not change your account.
